The First Service

So I know it’s sort of anti-climactic to write about our first service four days past the fact, but I’ve sort of been trying to catch up!

Our first Sunday in our new building was incredible. Absolutely incredible. There are no words!

I don’t think I’ve ever worked so hard in my entire life as I did last week, but sitting in the auditorium on Sunday morning made it all worth it.

From the outset of the service on thing was communicated loud and clear: God is faithful.

When people entered into the auditorium the stage was dark and the word “welcome” was all that was on our screens. We opened the service with a video that had verses about God’s faithfulness and it ended with the word ‘faithful’ on the screen.

Joseph Tenney, our worship pastor, then emerged and sang (acapella) words to an original song he had written about God’s faithfulness.

Our lead pastor Jackson then came up and talked about all of the sacrifices that people made to see our building become a reality.

Park had been a “church on the move” for over 20 years and has met in over 20 different locations across the city of Chicago… and now, for the first time in our history we have a place to call our own. |

Even in the midst of the excitement of it all Jackson said something that stood out to me… he talked about all the sacrifices people made… their time, their resources, their money… to make our building a reality… and he said, “but today isn’t about you or what you’ve done… today is a day to celebrate God’s faithfulness to Park Community Church.”

A short video followed introducing our new logo, and then the stage was light up and our worship team lead us in a time of worship.

What stood out to me as the definitive moment of our service was when we sang the song “God of the City.” The words of that song are so perfect for Park’s context and our vision for the city of Chicago. While we were singing the song, the curtains on our stage were drawn back to reveal the view of the city skyline from our auditorium windows.

I don’t think there was a dry eye in the place. What a powerful picture of our vision and God’s faithfulness to our church.

When Park first started, the vision of the founding pastor Matt Heard (now pastor at Woodman Valley Chapel) was that Park would “do ministry in the shadow of the skyline”… and here we were, 20 years later, sitting in a building that we could call our own, looking out to see the city of Chicago. The vision, literally right in front of us. Matt is coming this weekend to speak and we are so excited to welcome him!

Our lead pastor Jackson then kicked off a new message series called “What is the Church?” Now that we’ve got a building we don’t want to settle in and think we’ve reached a goal… we know there’s so much more ahead of us! He challenged everyone with the thought that we are the church and we have a responsibility to be doing life outside of the walls of the church, engaged with culture, and engaged with those who don’t know Christ. You should really take time to listen to the message! It was AWESOME.

He affirmed our vision and how we are all called to be a part of what God is doing. We even wrote the vision on the wall!

Anyway, it was just so overwhelming to see it all happen and be a part of it. I’m so thankful for God allowing me the opportunity to be a part of this. It’s truly been an honor and I get so excited when I think about what God has in store for us.

It was so cool to see people in our new space, hanging out in the cafe, and to just see life here. I know this is only the beginning… greater things are yet to come!

Communications Revolution, Part 2b :: Introducing the Logo

This weekend we introduced our new logo to our congregation via video. Jason Widney, our new media director at Park put this AMAZING video together… check it out!

Communication Revolution, Part 2: Logos

Since this original blog post in 2008, the Park logo has gone on to be listed as one of the Top 77 Church Logos by ChurchRelevance.com!

Awhile ago I started the first post in a series on the “Communications Revolution” taking place at Park. That was back in April… it’s now June… so I’ve either been working very hard or have been very lazy! :-)

Anyway, one of the first things that I wanted to tackle at Park was our logo. This was it:

LOGO PCC_Strght_COATED_4C

Now, it’s not a terrible logo by any means, it’s a good logo. But in the context of our surroundings (downtown Chicago) it didn’t fit and it didn’t feel like “us.”

Having read The Brad Gap, I’ve come to understand that a brand isn’t a logo or icon or whatever you want to call it, it’s the feeling people get when they hear about your church/organization. Your logo/icon simply supposed to be a reflection of who you are.

Well, I wasn’t sure what a leaf had to do with us or how that represented us. Sure, there are some Christian themes there: growth, new life, etc… but it’s just soooo suburban looking.

The “leaf” was also designed at a point in Park’s history where they met solely in Lincoln Park… so that made more sense… parks, trees, leaves, etc.

But, it’s a new day in the life of Park. While we will continue to have a presence in Lincoln Park, we are now in the River North neighborhood and eventually hope to expand and add campuses across the city. So, we needed a logo to reflect a church for the city… and so the madness began.

We hired out a company to try to help us out… 20 logo concepts later we canned the project. Nothing seemed to fit. We didn’t want something religious looking, but things that didn’t have religious imagery looked like any other logo that’s out there. We wanted something unique.

We had a couple of designers work on ideas for us and again, great logos, but nothing that everyone involved in the decision making process could agree upon.

Then we found Kyle. Well, we found Kyle via the company we hired out to do our website (more on that later)… he’s a talented designer and he decided to take on the challenge of designing a logo for us.

He sent us two concepts and we fell in love with this one:
Parklogoa

There were a couple of issues with it, though.

We loved the ‘dot matrix’ feel… very forward. We weren’t down with ‘park’ being lowercase… it seems a bit informal… I loved that it didn’t say ‘community church’, but people protested. And while it was a solid design, the problem was there wasn’t anything unique about it that would communicate to the outside world that we were a a church. It could have been a restaurant, a condo building, a hotel…

So, with a little help from the Church Marketing Lab  [See how the Church Marketing Lab helped here and here.] we worked with some different ideas and came up with this:

Park_logo_2PMS

And then we had a winner.

I love the futuristic, dot matrix feel of this… that it’s the city skyline in an abstract way… that the cross is subtle (but that it’s there!)… and that it really conveys the message of our church… we want to glorify God in the city… we want to stand out and be different.

Initial feedback from people around here has been incredibly positive and the new logo officially debuts to our congregation tomorrow morning at our first service in our new building!!!

Here are some example of how we’ve used the logo:

Brooke Fraser in Chicago

On Wednesday night I headed out with some friends to see Brooke Fraser play at the Lakeshore Theater. The name might not ring a bell, but if you’ve followed Hillsong or Hillsong United lately, you’ll know her and her song Hosanna.

I’ve seen Brooke tour with United a couple of times, but this time around she was touring solo with special guest William Fitzsimmons.

While the context was very different (not in a church, not a ‘worship experience’), it was so cool to see her using her gifts and talents in signing and songwriting and using them outside of the church walls. I guarantee you the crowd there that night was completely different than one that would show up for a Hillsong worship night.

The whole time I was sitting there I was thinking: this is what ‘missional’ looks like.

She never mentioned Jesus, God, Christianity, Hillsong, and never busted into a worship song… but the way she carried herself on stage and the words she sang all pointed to Christ. You could tell there was something different about her.

I was completely impressed and so encouraged to see her doing what she’s doing… and William was incredible too!

Her CD Albertine released this week in the US and I definitely encourage you to check it out!
