Made to Stick & Switch Giveaway

As a communicator, two of the top challenges you often face are…

  1. Getting your message to “stick” with people.
  2. Communicating/coaching/helping people through change.

One book that has been on my “must read” list for awhile that addresses some of these issues is the book Made to Stick: Why Some Ideas Survive and Others Die by brothers Chip and Dan Heath. They spoke at the Willow Creek Arts Conference and Leadership Summit this year, you can read my notes here and here.

Made to Stick is a phenomenal resource for any leader or communicator. It challenges the way we communicate and gives some really practical suggestions on how to create and communicate messages that stick with people.

Chip & Dan are a couple of months away from releasing a new book called Switch: How to Change Things When Change is Hard. I was able to get my hands on a pre-release copy of the book at the Leadership Summit and can say it’s a must-read as well. The book focuses on change and the challenges we have in communicating and leading people towards change.

Well, I happened to get my hands on a copy of Made to Stick, a pre-release copy of Switch, and a DVD of them speaking on Made to Stick to give away to one of you today! Just comment below and I’ll select one of you to get this great resource. [ Courtesy of the Willow Creek Association. ] And, when Switch is released in February, you’ll get your own copy of the published book!

So if you need to figure out how to get sticky or make a switch, comment away! I’ll pick one of you at the end of the day!

Congrats to @GeraldNC for winning [ thanks to the random number generator ]… everyone else, if I could, I would give you all a copy of both of these books! Made to Stick is available in bookstores now and you can pre-order your copy of Switch today!

Hey Tim, I'm always up for a good book. :)

I thought Chip and Dan did a great job and the Leadership Summit. Their session was one of the most insightful this year. The whole analogy of aligning the elephant and the rider is gold!

  • Phil Bowdle

Sounds like a couple great books. I know our church is going through a lot of change right now, so Switch sounds particularly relevant right now.

  • Lyn Silarski

    Tim,

Wow I just typed a bunch and then logged in to leave my response and it's gone! Not good lol. Try again.

Thanks for the offer you're throwing out here to all of us. Just like the others I'm replying cuz I have a need for these books. I hadn't heard of either of them before, but after reading your blog here and the comments you also posted links to, I can definitely see where I could learn something from them…especially "Made to Stick".

I can so agree with this:

"In the context of church, there is an abundance of information about the Gospel, God, etc and we get anxious to tell everyone everything… we have to learn to strip things away… and make it simple."

I struggle with this so much! When teaching Sunday School to the H.S. kids, I can have a plan of what point I want to get them to understand, but then get thrown off course and go right on to another great truth I want them to know. My heart is for them to know EVERYTHING, but of course everything can't be digested in just an hour's time, so I've got to "regulate" my self and get better at sticking to one potent message. Maybe I could learn that from the book.

As for "Switched", sure it'd be handy right now as well. I'm on fire after attending the WFX conference and wanting to change our stage design, use more tech, etc. but of course there's going to be some friction, especially since we're a traditional style church trying to get more "blended" or "modern". I understand change needs to happen slowly, but I also fear losing my fire that I've returned with if I don't move fast enough. So sure, I can probably learn something applicable from "Switch" as well.

    Thanks again for the opportunity!

congrats, you won! [ thanks to the random number generator, you were selected! ]

I was intrigued at WLS09 with their statement about big problems not being solved by big fixes, but rather with a series of small solutions. I wanted to find out more about what they had to say about this, but was bummed afterward when I went to the book store and they had already sold out of the 2 book set.

Saw them at the Leadership Summit. Would be great to read the books. Thanks!

I was "Made to Stick" to these books. Would love to Stick it to that book and read it in one day! Then I would Switch over to the other one. These books would stick to me and our ministry, and I would Switch them over to other staff members and Stick it to them as well. We'd all have duct tape residue covering our hands from devouring these books and allowing them to be used as tools in God's hand to affect change in our ministry. Just sayin'.

Wow do I need these. Change? Stickiness? Yeah.

    Me! Ooh me, Mr. Kotter!

These look interesting. Both look fairly relevant, but Switch looks especially interesting.

  • Matt

Awesome! Would love to win! Thanks for sharing about these great resources! I totally agree that those are major challenges that we face when communicating.
