Midweek Mind Dump

  • Well hello, September.
  • Had a great and relaxing Labor Day weekend. Spent some time with friends in Rockford, IL and enjoyed being disconnected from city life and social media. I didn’t even take my laptop with me!
  • I went to 37signals’ office yesterday and got to sit in [with 37 people, appropriately] for a Q&A session with Zappos’ CEO Tony Hsieh, Jason Fried and David Heinemeier Hansson. Read the notes here.
  • Next Thursday I’m SO EXCITED to spend the day with Seth Godin and others for the Chicago stop on his Road Trip. Apparently the day is “off the record” but I’ll see what I can do to share some of the goodness with you. There are still some half-day tickets left… you owe it to yourself to be there.
  • Story is two weeks away! I can’t believe it. Tickets are sold-out but I’ll be blogging notes. If you’re going to be in town let me know, would love to connect!
  • If you’re in town for Story or if you’re near Chicago, September’s Elements[Chicago] gathering will be held on Sept 23 at Roscoe’s featuring former Evanescence front man David Hodges and spoken word artist Amena Brown. Details here.
  • Finally settled into a new apartment in the Lakeview neighborhood of Chicago. Best part: I have my own office space! Thanks to CB2 and IKEA I’ve got a great new work space at home. I’m still waiting on the wall art to arrive. I’ll post pictures once it’s complete.
  • I was really sad for charity: water yesterday but admired their transparency and resilience to press forward despite some setbacks with their live drill. We can all take some notes on how they handled that situation.
  • the99percent continues to deliver great content. Check out their recent post on the Five Levels of Communication in a Connected World. Great stuff.
  • Just a head’s up I’ll be gone most of October. Headed to Catalyst in ATL the first week of October; then to Cali for my sister’s wedding, and I’m finalizing plans to head to Cape Town to be on the social media team for the Lausanne Gathering.
  • On my nightstand: Hipster Christianity, Open Leadership and Spiritual Formation.
  • On the earbuds: Mumford & Sons, Arcade Fire, and David Gray.
  • On my heart: You’re here to be light, bringing out the God-colors in the world. God is not a secret to be kept. We’re going public with this, as public as a city on a hill. If I make you light-bearers, you don’t think I’m going to hide you under a bucket, do you? I’m putting you on a light stand. Now that I’ve put you there on a hilltop, on a light stand—shine! Keep open house; be generous with your lives. By opening up to others, you’ll prompt people to open up with God, this generous Father in heaven.” – Matthew 5:13-16, The Message
