Monday Mind Dump :: Grammy Edition

grammyrecap

It’s the Monday after the Grammy Awards! Here’s my take on the biggest night in music in this week’s download of the latest and greatest.

  • First off, I love how social media enhances shared experiences. I felt like I was watching the Grammys with all of my friends in a virtual living room last night. It was great to hear everyone’s reactions and thoughts on the night. My favorite tweets from the night are below.
  • Speaking of social media, it’s pretty unreal and tragic about Whitney Houston on the eve of the Grammys. Again, such a great talent taken way too soon. Even crazier, Mashable reports that Twitter broke the news about her death 27 minutes before the press.
  • E! definitely has the best pre-Grammy red carpet coverage. Ross the Intern and Kelly Osbourne were a riot.
  • LL Cool J’s opening prayer was moving. It was a great tribute to Whitney Houston and it was pretty surreal to see all of the music industry with their heads bowed in prayer. You know so many of them got their start singing at church.
  • LOVED the stage design this year. It’s always amazing to see what they come up with, especially since this is one of the biggest music performances of the year. I thought the outside performances with the Foo Fighters, Deadmau5, David Guetta and Chris Brown were pretty awesome, too. Now to see how many church stages will be inspired by the Grammy design.
  • I guess I missed the memo about having a pompadour.
  • GoogleChrome is making great commercials these days. Loved this mashup of some great YouTube videos. Again, great marketing tells a story in other people’s words.
  • I was secretly hoping Jay Z and Beyonce would show up with Blue Ivy and present her to the world Lion King style.
  • Reba McIntyre needs to lay off the plastic surgery. Age with grace, people.
  • I heard that Tina Turner called Rihanna and asked for her hair back.
  • LOVED the Rihanna/Coldplay performance. Makes me so excited for their tour this year.
  • One showstopper none of us expected was the Chipotle commercial featuring Willie Nelson covering Coldplay’s “The Scientist.” Read more about it here. I’ve never seen a stranger commercial for a burrito but it worked.
  • The Beach Boys tribute was a tad bit awkward since it was followed-up by an act featuring the REAL Beach Boys. While I was entertained by Adam Levine and Foster the People, I couldn’t help but have Full House flashbacks the entire time. John Stamos really needed to make a cameo.
  • I did think it was quite funny that on the entire telecast of the awards ceremony that only a handful of awards were actually presented. It’s all about the show!
  • Sir Paul McCartney teaches us to never stop refining our craft. He did an outstanding job in both performances. And we all needed a little reprieve from the Nicki Manaj performance.
  • BON IVER! It’s about time he got some recognition. Loved his stuff and am glad that he’s getting some love from the music industry.
  • Another surprise during the night was The Civil Wars opening for the Taylor Swift hoedown. I loved what Joy from The Civil Wars said, “Everyone is somebody else’s opening act…” So true. And, random bit of trivia, Joy is Joy Williams, the former Christian music sweetheart.
  • Favorite Tweet of the Night #1: Steven Furtick in response to Taylor Swift’s performance of her song, Mean.
  • Katy Perry definitely let out some aggression in her performance. While most people think it was pointed at her ex Russel Brand, part of me wonders if it was speaking about her faith journey. Did you know she was a Christian recording artist before she became what she is today? [A really good one that was never embraced by the church I might add.]
  • Glen Campbell’s performance was bittersweet. It was moving to see him do what he does best one more time. So sad to see the devastating consequences of Alzheimers. Or, as Taylor Swift calls it, Altimers.
  • Favorite Tweet of the Night #2. We can all think what we think about Chris Brown, and I’m right there with you, but I appreciate what Justin Wise had to say about all that:
  • Tony Bennett is a class act. All around. I am making a point to get out to Ravinia this year if he’s there. I’ve got to see him perform once in my lifetime. Or, more appropriately, once in his.
  • The tribute to Whitney Houston was poignant and moving. I have no idea how Jennifer Hudson mustered up the strength to sing “I Will Always Love You.” It was beautiful.
  • I totally love Deadmau5, but that act looked like a twisted version of the Mickey Mouse Club.
  • Favorite Tweet of the Night #3 in response to the exorcism, er, performance of Nicki Manaj:
  • My take on the Nicki Manaj performance: Nicki Manaj is making Lady Gaga look like Amy Grant [after she went secular and the divorce].
  • Adele, Adele, Adele. What a truly classy dame. In the age of Gaga, Katy Perry, and the rest of them, she shows that true talent, humility, and grace can take you a long way. She deserved all of the accolades she received last night. And, what a powerful testament to how devastating circumstances can be the seed of creating some of beautiful art. Man, her ex-boyfriend must feel like a tool.
  • Congrats to other Grammy winners we didn’t see during the show including Chris Tomlin and Kirk Franklin. #represent
  • Now the Grammy coverage I am most looking forward to will be coming from these two cuties, Sophia Grace and Rosie from The Ellen Show. I can’t wait to see their red carpet shenanigans.
  • My Grammy-watching evening ended in a more simpler time… in the 1920s at Downtown Abbey. I am so in love with that show. This week’s episode did not fail to disappoint. I can’t believe the season finale is next week. So sad! :(
  • What were your thoughts on the Grammys? Reactions? Would love to hear what you thought of the night!

Great stuff!  Thanks so much for sharing . . . a great recap of the Grammy’s!

From a church communications point of view . . . we just launched a new series yesterday called “Pop God” . . . we launched off with a great version of “Rolling in the Deep” . . . it went so well!

We ended up getting some press about it . . . the tie in to the Grammy’s was fun!  You can see a little bit of the coverage here: http://www.christianpost.com/news/n-j-megachurch-to-sing-adele-bruno-mars-cee-lo-songs-69207/

      Thanks for reading, Rich!

Love the “Pop God” series idea. Love it. And congrats on the press surrounding it. I pray it will resonate in your community and make an impact. Art is a way humanity expresses its longings and desires, and ultimately its search for God. I hope you can help connect people to a journey of faith!
